2019 BMW X7 spied with less camouflage

The BMW X7 has been spied again this week, giving us a closer look at the company’s upcoming SUV flagship.

Compared to the prototype seen at the Nurburgring in April, this X7 appears to be wearing its production headlights and front grille, along with a darker camouflage with a spider web-like pattern.

The front bumper still appears unfinished, though the tail-lights and rear treatment look to be that of the production version.

Compared to the Concept X7 shown in Frankfurt earlier this year, the prototypes have a more watered-down exterior design from what we can see – which is probably a good thing, considering the negative feedback the Concept X7 received.

We’re expecting the X7 to look very much like an enlarged version of the X1, X3 and the new-generation X5, sporting a higher roofline to better-accommodate third-row occupants, along with a longer wheelbase for better second-row space.

Rivals for the X7 will include the Audi Q7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS, along with the Range Rover and Bentley Bentayga in higher grades.

Under the skin will be the company’s CLAR platform, which already forms the basis of several models including the X3, 5 Series and 7 Series.

Engines are expected to come in the form of six- and eight-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel units, along with the possibility of the twin-turbo V12 used in the M760Li xDrive.

There’s also a high chance of a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) iPerformance version – especially considering the Concept X7 was a PHEV.

Production is scheduled to commence at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in the US sometime in 2018, so expect the final version to be revealed in the first half of next year – potentially as early as the Geneva motor show in March.

Additionally, BMW’s local division has confirmed it will bring the X7 to Australia shortly after production kicks off, so expect to see the big SUV on local roads either late-2018 or early-2019.
