Toyota Camry production end date for Japan announced, still safe in Australia, new model due 2024

Toyota has ended speculation and confirmed Camry production for the Japanese market will stop by the end of this year. But it will remain on sale in Australia beyond this generation, with a new model due next year.

The final example of the current Toyota Camry – for Japan – will roll off the production line at the end of this year, the car-maker has confirmed, ending weeks of speculation.

But the top-selling mid-size sedan for three decades locally is safe in Australia, and a new model is due next year.

A notice on Toyota’s Japanese website says the Camry will cease production for its home market in “late December 2023”.

In March, business news outlet Nikkei Asia reported the Camry will be discontinued in Japan amid poor sales – and to free up production for overseas markets such as the US and Australia.

As exclusively reported by Drive in February, a new-generation Toyota Camry is due to arrive in mid-2024 – but it is expected to be sold in export markets, and not in Japan.

Toyota has not confirmed whether production is merely ending for Japanese-market models in December 2023, or whether the entire production line is ceasing.

While Australian-market Camry models are sourced from Japan, the vehicle is also manufactured in the US, Thailand, China, India, and Taiwan.

Despite the popularity of the Camry waning in Japan, the vehicle remains a strong seller in Australia – though it lost its 28-year winning streak in the mid-size sedan segment to the Tesla Model 3 electric car last year.

In late January, Toyota Australia revealed to Drive it was holding a two-year waiting list for the Camry Hybrid.

If production only continues to the end of the year, it is expected buyers at the front of the line will receive the next-generation model.

“While we cannot comment on speculation regarding our parent company’s plans for its local market, there are categorically no plans to stop selling Camry in Australia,” a spokesperson for Toyota Australia told Drive this week, echoing its statement from March.

The new-generation Toyota Camry is expected to launch overseas in 2024.
