2023 Mercedes-AMG EQS53 price and specs: $328,400 for electric flagship

Mercedes-AMG’s first electric vehicle in Australia is its most powerful local model to date, and its most luxurious – but there’s a high price tag to match.

  • 2023 Mercedes-AMG EQS53 pricing and specifications
  • Flagship electric sedan arrives in AMG form only
  • 484kW/950Nm standard, more power optional
  • Priced from $328,400 before on-road costs

The 2023 Mercedes-AMG EQS53 4Matic electric car has arrived in Australia, as the most expensive AMG money can buy today – and the first four-door AMG without a fuel filler cap.

While Mercedes-Benz’s flagship EQS electric sedan can be had in a spread of Benz-badged variants overseas, it will be offered in Australia exclusively – at least at launch – in AMG EQS53 guise, in a high level of specification.

The EQS53 is the first all-electric Mercedes-AMG model to be sold in Australia; the company’s first electric vehicle (EV), the SLS Electric Drive supercar of 2013, wasn’t offered here.

Priced from $328,400 plus on-road costs, the AMG EQS53 is the most expensive AMG currently on sale (though not of all time), worth more than three A45 S hot hatchbacks – or one and a half E63 S performance sedans.

Powering the AMG EQS53 is a pair of electric motors and a 107.8kWh (usable) battery pack, good for outputs of 484kW and 900Nm in the standard model, a 3.8-second 0-100km/h sprint time, and a 220km/h top speed.

Optioning the $7690 AMG Dynamic Plus Package unlocks outputs of 560kW and 1020Nm in Race Start launch-control mode – making the EQS53 AMG’s most powerful car on sale in Australia – for a 3.4-second 0-100km/h dash and 250km/h top speed.

Mercedes-Benz Australia claims up to 587km of electric driving range according to lenient Australian ‘ADR81/02’ testing protocols, enabled by the large battery and a 0.23 drag coefficient.

DC fast charging at up to 200kW is available – allowing for a 10 to 80 per cent charge in 31 minutes – while buyers can choose from standard 11kW or optional 22kW AC onboard chargers, for a 10 to 100 per cent charge on a home wallbox in 10 hours (11kW) or five hours (22kW).

Backing up the power are 415mm six-piston front and 378mm single-piston rear compound brakes (carbon ceramics are optional), adaptive air suspension, and rear-wheel steering that can rotate at up to nine degrees for a smaller low-speed turning circle or better high-speed stability.

Standard tech features are plentiful, led by the MBUX Hyperscreen, which combines 12.3-inch driver instrument, 17.7-inch centre and 12.3-inch passenger displays into one 1.41-metre panel across the dashboard, running Mercedes-Benz’s latest software.

There’s also Digital Light LED headlights from the S-Class – with 1.3 million micro-mirrors per light, offering 2.6 million ‘pixels’ – plus a 15-speaker Burmester stereo, four-zone climate control, and nappa leather front seats with heating, ventilation, massaging and memory.

A full suite of advanced safety aids is fitted as standard, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring and auto parking – but the Level 3 semi-autonomous driving tech available overseas isn’t legal yet in Australia.

A full list of standard features is included in the list below. Optional extras range from $9990 ceramic brakes and a $9490 matte grey paint finish, to a home wallbox charger for $1450.

All AMG EQS vehicles in Australia come standard with a three-year unlimited subscription to the Chargefox network’s 350kW ultra-rapid public chargers, along with an 11kW onboard charger (a 22kW unit costs $2490).

The 2023 Mercedes-AMG EQS53 is available to order now, with first customer deliveries commencing imminently.
