Ferrari teases upcoming SUV

The

Ferrari Purosangue will be revealed later this year, and could become the most powerful series-production petrol SUV ever built.

Italian supercar maker Ferrari has published the first teaser image of its upcoming performance SUV, known provisionally as the Purosangue.

The above image was published to the company’s social media channels overnight, with the caption: “You’ve heard the rumours… and we’re delighted to confirm they’re true (some of them). All will be revealed later this year.”

Slim LED headlights are visible, alongside a sculptured bonnet, wide wheel arches, and a low grille adorned with the iconic Prancing Horse emblem.

A pre-production version of the Ferrari

Purosangue leaked on social media last month, with alloy wheels on the smaller end of what’s likely to be offered to customers (shown above and below).

These images reveal a tapered coupe-style roofline, and suggest the car will ride lower than SUVs from other prestige brands.

While the newest Ferrari is on track for reveal before the end of this year, the first examples are not expected to arrive in Australian showrooms before 2023. Ferrari is yet to confirm what engine will drive the wheels of its new SUV, however two variants – an electrified V6 or V8 ‘base’ model, and a flagship naturally-aspirated V12 – have previously been reported.

The latter could launch as the

most powerful series-production, petrol-powered SUV ever built by a mainstream manufacturer – potentially topping the 530kW/868Nm V8 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat, and the 520kW/900Nm Aston Martin DBX707.

A fully-electric variant may be offered before the model is retired, however the Italian manufacturer is yet to comment on the possibility.

Despite years of resistance t

o building a Ferrari SUV from former CEO Sergio Marchionne, the new vehicle was likely prompted by increasing demand for large, daily driving-capable luxury vehicles in growing markets such as China, Russia, and the Middle East.

Growing competition in the segment from Ferrari’s direct competitors – including

LamborghiniAston Martin, and Porsche – also likely contributed to the decision.

The iconic Italian marque delivered a claimed 11,155 cars to customers in 2021 – more than during any other year in its history.
