The BMW 3 Series is the 2022 Drive Car of the Year Best Medium Luxury Car, beating out both the Volvo S60 and Genesis G70 for top honours in the prestigious category. When looking a cut above the mainstream car brands, buyers expect a sense of occasion, a thoroughly comfortable and sorted driving experience, a plush cabin, and technological advancement.

The Drive team deemed the BMW 3 Series best represented the above aspects of luxury vehicle ownership. This is the second year in a row that the BMW 3 Series has won its category at DCOTY, further emphasising what a polished product it’s become in a hotly-contested segment.

As part of the 3 Series range, BMW offers a three-strong range encompassing a variety of buyer needs and price points. With that said, all variants come comprehensively equipped.

Beginning the range is the 320i which starts from near-$70k drive-away, though the range also comprises the 330i mid-tier model grade, the 330e plug-in hybrid, and flagship M340i xDrive which caps the range at $111,900 before on-road costs.

A Touring wagon body style is also available, though only in 330i guise.

Our pick: BMW 330i

While the entry-level 320i offers a great deal for a range-opening variant, the Drive team favours the 330i specification 3 Series for its boosted engine outputs and enhanced equipment.

The BMW 330i uses a turbocharged four-cylinder engine which outputs 190kW/400Nm to the rear wheels, which suits the model’s sporty character best. The 330i can be had with Luxury line or M Sport packages, and starts at just under $80,000.

Over the 320i, the 330i gets 19-inch alloy wheels, Vernasca leather upholstery, keyless entry, and extra safety kit.

It is also the only variant in the range which can be had with the more practical wagon body style, further adding choice for the 3 Series buyer.
