Australia’s Formula One star Daniel Ricciardo can now claim to have a supercar bearing his name, based on McLaren’s 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8-powered 720S.
The first of three examples of the McLaren 720S Daniel Ricciardo Edition supercar has arrived in Australia, an exclusive celebration of the Perth-born, eight-time race-winning Formula One driver.
Revealed in September, the first example of the limited-run 720S has hit the streets of Melbourne – pictured here at the home of the Formula One Australian Grand Prix, the Albert Park circuit.
Three examples of the supercar will be built – referencing Ricciardo’s race number, 3 – as part of a collaboration between Sydney and Melbourne McLaren showrooms, and the British marque’s MSO personalisation division.
Finished in ‘Papaya Spark’ and ‘Burton Blue’ (as used on the 2021 McLaren F1 car), the McLaren Daniel Ricciardo Edition 720S (as it’s officially known) adds carbon-fibre sills inscribed with Ricciardo’s signature, ‘3’ etched into the doors, and ‘One of Three’ commemorative plates.
No mechanical changes are detailed, meaning the regular 720S supercar’s 530kW/770Nm 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 and seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmissions likely carry over.
“We’re delighted to see the first of this exclusive series arrive in Australia, as at home on the tarmac around Albert Park as its namesake Daniel Ricciardo. Complete with the Australian flag adorning the front haunches, this special edition model is the perfect celebration of our Perth-born racer – we’re excited to see it out on Australian roads.” said George Biggs, Commercial Executive Director at McLaren Automotive.
It’s not clear who has purchased each of the three cars, nor how much they cost – though expect a suitable increase over the $489,900 before on-road costs sticker attached to the ‘standard’ 720S in Australia.
