Honda will use the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas to demonstrate a portable, swappable battery pack for electric vehicles (EVs).

The battery pack will be displayed as part of a ‘Mobile Power Pack World’ exhibit, which looks into swappable batteries and smarter energy management. Along with the removable, portable batteries, Honda will show a battery exchanger concept capable of storing and charging the mobile power packs.

The cute Urban EV and Sport EV Concepts both promised to offer smart power management systems, but details weren’t exactly forthcoming, so it will be interesting to see how the ‘Mobile Power Pack World’ will expand on the (admittedly loose) brief laid out by those show cars.

Along with the removable batteries, the Honda CES stand will play host to four ‘3E’ robots, designed with the goals of ’empower, experience, empathy’ in mind. They’ve been created to try and demonstrate how AI and smart robotics could enrich our lives in future – both in day-to-day life, and in disaster relief scenarios.

The 3E-A18 is a companion robot capable of showing “compassion to humans with a variety of facial expressions,” while 3E-B18 is a chair-style mobility solution for indoor or outdoor use. 3E-C18 (can you pick up on the naming theme here?) is a small mobility concept with “multi-functional cargo space”, and 3E-D18 is an autonomous off-roader which uses AI to assist “in a broad range of work activities.”

It probably goes without saying, but all four robots are concepts.

The Consumer Electronics Show kicks off on January 10 in Las Vegas.
