The design of the new Jeep Grand Commander has been outed ahead of the car’s debut next year in China.
Autohome has published filings made by Fiat Chrysler with China’s State Trademark Office.
Among the documents lodged with the body include diagrams showing the design of a new seven-seat Jeep model, as well as registration details for the Grand Commander nameplate.
Based on the Yuntu concept shown at this year’s Shanghai motor show, the new Grand Commander has gained traditional door handles, conventionally hinged and framed doors, and larger head- and tail-light units.
No doubt the production vehicle will ditch the concept’s glitzy interior for something that’s simpler and cheaper to produce, and with a more traditional look and feel.
While the Grand Commander name pays homage to the Commander SUV, which sat on a stretched version of the Grand Cherokee’s platform, the new crossover looks to be based on a front-wheel drive platform.
The seven-seat Grand Commander will reportedly be powered by the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol that makes it debut under the bonnet of the next-generation Wrangler, where it produces 209kW of power and 400Nm of torque.
Filings discovered earlier last week indicate a version of this engine will also be offered in the facelifted Cherokee crossover, at least in the USA.
The Jeep Grand Commander has been developed for the Chinese market. If it goes on sale in other markets, it could be sold as a Chrysler or a Dodge model.
