The face-lifted Jeep Cherokee will reportedly be offered with the option of Fiat Chrysler’s new 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
Bozi Tatarevic, a freelance automotive journalist, has done some sniffing around Fiat Chrysler VIN filings for the upcoming model year, and discovered a nugget of information about the upcoming Cherokee facelift, confirming the suspicions of many in the process.
In a tweet this week, Tatarevic revealed the revised Cherokee will be available in the USA with the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine unveiled with the next-generation Wrangler.
Boasting 201kW (270hp) of power, the 2.0-litre mill will be joined by the existing 137kW (184hp) 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine and 202kW (271hp) 3.2-litre V6 options.
It’s not known if the 2.0-litre turbo option will be offered Down Under in the face-lifted Cherokee. The new Wrangler will arrive in Australia from late 2018, but will only be available with a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel and a 3.6-litre V6.
Spy photos reveal the updated the Cherokee will feature a more conventional front-end design, with the split headlight treatment and beaky grille being thrown out.
That the updated Cherokee will employ the 2.0-litre turbo engine should come as no surprise – it seemed highly unlikely Fiat Chrysler would develop a new engine and use it only in a single vehicle line.
