A pre-production prototype of what could be the next Porsche 911 GT2 has been spied in and around the iconic Nurburgring circuit, giving us an early glimpse of the hottest version of the German sports car.
Wearing a disguise akin to the bodykit on the racy 911 GT3, this development vehicle features a number of unique components that set it apart from its ‘lesser’ sibling.
Up front there’s some extra bits tacked onto the splitter, two vents carved into the bonnet, and three gills in the front wheel arch – though some of these features are also likely to make their way onto the inevitable 911 GT3 RS which should be on its way soon.
The most obvious changes are at the rear, which sports a massive wing and a new rear bumper with two cannon-like outward exhaust tips – a feature reminiscent of 911 GT2s of generations past – along with some vents behind the rear windscreen.
Filling the arches are the same alloy wheels seen on the GT3, which feature a centre lock, though it’s unknown whether the GT2 will get unique rims when it is revealed.
What we can’t see is what’s under the lid, though going by previous versions the 911 GT2 will probably get a twin-turbo version of the GT3’s 4.0-litre flat six, which should see it eclipse the 427kW/700Nm outputs of the current 911 Turbo S – which uses a twin-turbo 3.8 flat six.
It’s unknown how far off the Porsche 911 GT2 is from production, though this prototype suggests it’s not far off at all. However, it’s a logical assumption that the GT3 RS is set to be revealed first, ahead of the GT2 not long after.
