McLaren 720S gets Lego-fied for little car enthusiasts

McLaren at Geneva Motor Show 2017

The 2017 McLaren 720S has become the latest addition to the LEGO Speed Champions range, joining the P1 hypercar in the toy company’s range of model cars.

Available to buy from June 1, the 3D-printed McLaren 720S model is accompanied by a car designer minifigure and design studio desk, along with a coffee cup and an original design sketch.

Lego says it took one of its designers a whole year to perfect and freeze the design of the model, in an effort to create an accurate representation of the athletic coupe.

“The LEGO interpretation of the McLaren 720S reflects the most exciting part of the design process, when a two-dimensional sketch is transformed into a physical, three-dimensional model,” said McLaren Automotive’s Chief Designer, Rob Melville.

“Building a model like this gives the next generation of McLaren enthusiasts a taste of just how exhilarating that moment is for designers.”

The real McLaren 720S (below) was recently revealed at this year’s Geneva motor show, packing a new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 developing 529kW (720 horsepower) of power and 770Nm of torque.

Drive is sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, with 0-100km/h taking just 2.9 seconds, and 0-200km/h requiring 7.8 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 341km/h.

Starting at $489,900 before on-road costs in Australia, first deliveries of the 1:1 model 720S will arrive locally in the third quarter of 2017.

Meanwhile, the Lego version will be priced from 12.99 pounds ($21.37), and goes as fast as you can roll it.
