A growing number of Australian cars are finding their way to the UK. But among the V8-powered muscle utes is an oddity: a humble 1.4-litre Holden Cruze hatchback.
Australian muscle cars are becoming a more common sight on UK classified websites as V8 Holdens and Fords make their way to the other side of the world – and enthusiasts here and overseas look to snap them up.
However someone in the UK has listed for sale a blue, six-speed manual, Australian-made Holden you likely didn’t expect to see: a humble Holden Cruze hatchback.
Posted for sale on Facebook Marketplace for £1795 ($AU3350), the Cruze SRi hatch is said to be a 2011 model – which would make it one of the first five-door Cruze hatchbacks to roll off the production line in Elizabeth, South Australia.
The Cruze was sold in the UK as a Chevrolet – but this Australian-built and delivered import is powered by a more powerful 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine that was never made available on examples sold in Britain.
With 80,000km on the clock, the Cruze has been listed for £1795 ($AU3350) – about half the price of UK-delivered Chevrolet Cruze hatchbacks that have covered similar distances.
And it is a third of the price of an equivalent model in Australia, where examples are listed for $10,000 or more. When new, the Cruze SRi manual was priced from $24,990 plus on-road costs.
But it seems buyers in the UK aren’t tempted by the low price – despite a roadworthy certificate valid until August 2024 – given the Facebook Marketplace listing has been online for more than six months.
It’s not clear when the car was imported to the UK – but a search of its history online shows it has been on the road in the UK for at least four years.
The seller makes the claim that this Cruze is “same as astra j but alot [sic] better”, the J referring to the generation of Astra hatchback sold by General Motors’ Vauxhall brand in the UK from 2009 to 2015, and in Australia with Opel or Holden badges from 2012.
It is not the first Holden Cruze to make its way to the UK; an Australia-built 2011 Cruze sedan with 73,000km (45,391 miles) on the clock is listed on UK classifieds website AutoTrader at the time of writing for £4950 ($AU9250).
