Paul Newman’s V8-powered Volvo wagon for sale

The Hollywood, motorsport and salad-dressing legend had a bit of thing for covert, hot-rod Volvos, and now one example is for sale.

If you’re a successful actor with a love of cars and money to spend on frivolous things, you might as well have some fun.

Hollywood actor Paul Newman was a keen racer away from the screen and achieved impressive results throughout his career, including second place at the 1979 Le Mans 24-hour race in a Porsche 935.

His love of cars extended off the track and he famously commissioned a number of Volvo station wagons with substantially muscular engine transplants. The first was a 1988 740 Turbo with a 3.8-litre turbocharged V6 sourced from a Buick Grand National, the second was a 1995 960 with a 5.0-litre Ford Mustang V8, of which he built a sister car for talk-show host David Letterman.

The third and final ‘Newman’s Own’ Volvo was this 1998 V90 which is powered by a 6.0-litre GM LS2 V8 sourced from the C6 Corvette.

Built by his race team in 2007 as a gift for the actor, the V90 features a modified transmission (a GM unit), revised front suspension and new wiring loom. Sadly Newman passed away not long after the car was finished.

The action listing, through RM Sotheby’s, is part of a collection of Paul Newman’s racing memorabilia offered for sale.

While the Volvo is offered with no reserve, the price is estimated between $US20,000 to $US25,000 ($AU30,000 to $AU37,000). The car is also sold with the original logbooks and engine.

Newman’s original Volvo 740 was sold earlier this year for $US80,740 ($AU121,000)

Bidding closes on 13 June 2023, so if you’re a fan of Paul Newman the actor, racer, face on the salad dressing, or just a fan of fast, unique Volvos, this is a rare opportunity.
