Hyundai’s luxury brand is reportedly working on a new, full-size electric SUV to rival current and future models from Mercedes-Benz and Range Rover.
Genesis – the luxury division of South Korean car giant Hyundai – is preparing a new flagship electric SUV for launch in 2025, the GV90, according to new reports out of South Korea.
Unnamed sources cited by South Korean publication ET News claim the first GV90 examples are due to roll off the production line in November 2025, using Hyundai’s next-generation ‘eM’ electric-car underpinnings.
The vehicle would be a rival for a growing range of full-size SUVs – classed as ‘upper large SUVs’ by Australian new-car sales statisticians – with electric power, including the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV and inbound battery-powered Range Rover.
Reports of a full-size Genesis SUV above the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE-sized GV80 have swirled overseas for 18 months.
ET News reported in December 2021 the GV90 was due sometime “after” 2023, and would use the Hyundai group’s current E-GMP electric-car platform.
It is unclear if and why there has been a delay in the GV90’s launch timing – or if the publication’s initial report was incorrect.
ET News gives few details on the new vehicle, and says that “as prototype model development has not yet begun, vehicle specifications and mass production schedules are flexible”.
Genesis may have previewed the design of the GV90 in a video filmed in its design studio in late 2021, which showed a scale model of an SUV larger than the GV80 on a shelf in the back of one particular shot (pictured in the bottom left of the image above).
In addition to the GV90, ET News reports the facelift for the GV80 – which has been spied testing overseas – is due to enter production in October 2023. Drive understands first Australian showroom arrivals are due early next year.
Slated to begin production in January 2024 – with Australian arrivals expected soon after – is a ‘coupe’ version of the GV80, with a sloping roofline similar to a BMW X6 or Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe. It was previewed by a concept car earlier this year.
The South Korean news outlet claims a facelift for the smaller GV70 is due to begin production in May 2024 with petrol and diesel power, or August 2024 with electric power – ahead of a similar mid-life update for the smaller-still GV60 electric car in February 2025.
