Hyundai’s rival for the BMW 3 Series has received its second upgrade – with tweaked styling and more four-cylinder power – to keep it fresh among newer competitors.
The updated 2024 Genesis G70 has been unveiled – with styling changes, interior improvements and more power – ahead of first Australian showroom arrivals due by the end of this year.
It is the second update to the BMW 3 Series competitor since it went on sale overseas in 2017 – and is expected to extend the G70‘s life past the middle of the decade, when all new Genesis cars introduced will be electric or hydrogen fuel-cell.
While the changes may not be noticeable at first glance, the G70 has received mild exterior changes, revised interior controls and, overseas, a significantly more powerful turbo four-cylinder base engine.
Sedan and ‘Shooting Brake’ wagon models are due in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2023 (October to December), pending any delays.
Details regarding which of the South Korean-market updates – including the engine – will come to local showrooms will be revealed closer to launch.
The headline upgrade is a new 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol ‘base’ engine to replace the outgoing 2.0-litre turbo engine in both sedan and wagon body styles.
Shared with newer Genesis vehicles, the 2.5-litre four-cylinder develops 224kW and 422Nm – up 45kW and 69Nm from the 2.0-litre engine’s 179kW/353Nm outputs – and is matched with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6 retains its 274kW and 510Nm outputs – and remains available exclusive to the G70 sedan, with the wagon still four-cylinder only.
South Korean four-cylinder models gain Brembo performance brakes as standard – previously an option – as well as adaptive suspension, which was previously a V6 exclusive.
Exterior revisions include restyled 18-inch and 19-inch alloy wheel designs, revised Genesis badges with an intricate “Guilloché pattern”, and new Bartna Gray and Kawah Blue exterior colours.
Inside, the air-conditioning control panel has been redesigned with fewer dials, a touch panel and new gloss black buttons, and restyled switches above closer in design to Hyundai’s latest cars.
Other new features include a frameless rear-view mirror, new-design steering wheel centre hub, restyled key fob, and three new two-tone interior colour choices: Obsidian Black/Fog Grey, Obsidian Black/Vanilla Beige, and Forest Blue/Vanilla Beige.
Speed sign recognition has been added in South Korea, as well as USB-C charging ports, and the standard fitment of ventilated front and heated rear seats.
More details of the updated 2024 Genesis G70 are due closer to its Australian arrival between October and December 2023.
