Prices have increased for Tesla’s two most affordable electric-vehicle variants in Australia, a month after price cuts of up to $3907.
The price of the cheapest 2023 Tesla Model 3 and Model Y electric vehicles have increased in Australia by $400 – weeks after they were cut by up to $3900.
Tesla’s Australian website shows a $400 price rise applied to entry-level versions of the Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV – each powered by one electric motor that drives the rear wheels (compared to dearer and more powerful all-wheel-drive models).
The new listings bring the starting prices of these models to $64,300 plus on-road costs for the Tesla Model 3 sedan and $69,300 plus on-road costs for the Tesla Model Y SUV.
The price increases follow significant price cuts in Australia last month of up to $3907 – or up to four per cent – across the Model 3 and Model Y line-ups.
If past price increases for Tesla vehicles in Australia are a guide, existing customers with orders in the queue will be protected from the increases – and the new prices would apply to orders placed from today onwards.
The $400 price increases in Australia follow price rises for the Tesla Model Y in the US a fortnight ago of up to $2000.
The latest shift comes after price cuts of up to 20 per cent in the US and Europe last month.
Most car companies tend to ride the wave of currency fluctuations – and increase or decrease prices as a last resort – but the frequent knee-jerk reactions on Tesla prices appear to show the electric-car specialist is closely following changes in customer demand and exchange rates.
