In a changing of the guard after three decades in Australia, Kia outsold sister brand Hyundai and finished third outright for the first time in the annual sales race.
For the first time in Australian automotive history, Kia has outsold sister brand Hyundai in the annual new-car sales race.
The surge in sales elevated Kia to third place on the new-car sales podium behind Toyota and Mazda for the first time in Australia – displacing its stablemate Hyundai which ranked third for the past six years in a row (since 2016).
Since Hyundai and Kia arrived in Australia as budget brands in the 1990s, Hyundai has had a significant sales lead over Kia.
However, in a major changing of the guard, Hyundai was outpaced by its South Korean sibling Kia for the first time in a full calendar year in Australia in 2022, figures released today show.
A decade ago, Kia represented about a third of Hyundai’s local sales tally.
In 2022, Kia outsold Hyundai in all but two months of the year, but maintained its year-to-date lead at the end of every month.
Never before has Kia so consistently outsold Hyundai in Australia.
A Top Five finisher in recent years, Kia’s influx of stock as others waned saw it rank second outright behind Toyota on three occasions in 2022.
While Kia has had a decade of sales growth in Australia, Hyundai hit reverse in recent years amid severe stock shortages.
Some industry analysts believe Kia’s sales gains in Australia have come at the expense of Hyundai.
However, figures show both brands combined now sell more cars than they did a decade ago.
Official figures released today by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries show Kia reported a record 78,300 cars as sold in 2022 – an increase of 15.3 per cent compared to the prior year.
Hyundai posted a tally of 73,345 – a modest increase of 0.6 per cent compared to the prior year – in a market that grew up by 3.0 per cent over the same period.
It’s a surprising fall from grace for Hyundai which had previously eclipsed 100,000 sales in three calendar years (2014, 2015, 2016).
Below is a snapshot of the new-car sales results for Kia and Hyundai in Australia over the past decade.
