Toyota to launch six new BZ electric cars in Europe by 2026

Toyota is set to launch six new models from its BZ electric-car sub-brand in Europe within the next three years, it has been confirmed.

Japanese car giant Toyota has announced plans to launch at least six new electric cars in Europe by 2026, consisting of small SUVs and unspecified larger models.

Toyota’s European division confirmed overnight the six electric cars will form part of the company’s BZ – for ‘beyond zero emissions’ – sub-brand, joining the RAV4-sized BZ4X mid-sized SUV which launched last year.

According to Automotive News Europe, a Toyota insider has claimed the next BZ model to arrive on the continent will be a small SUV, followed by two more SUVs and three larger models.

Last month, Toyota revealed the BZ Compact SUV concept – smaller than the BZ4X, and a similar size to a petrol-powered Corolla Cross – but Automotive News Europe reports the small SUV won’t arrive in showrooms until 2025, citing sources within the Japanese car giant.

To date, the BZ4X and China-only BZ3 are the only Toyota BZ cars which have been unveiled, though the car giant is tipped to launch at least 16 electric vehicles by 2035.

Previewed with a fleet of concept cars in December 2021, these electric vehicles may include a pick-up, a sports car, and a range of family SUVs – however only a selection are expected to wear the BZ nameplate.

Toyota has targeted 50 per cent of its new-car sales in Europe to come from electric vehicles by 2030 – five years ahead of the European Union’s ban on petrol and diesel engines.

In Australia, Toyota is yet to launch an electric car.

While the BZ4X was initially expected to arrive in showrooms in late 2022, Toyota Australia pushed its debut back to the second half of 2023, citing “current levels of unprecedented global demand for vehicles”.
