The Tesla Model Y’s long-awaited ‘Track Mode’ has been rolled out via an over-the-air update, but Australian customers are still waiting up to six months to take delivery of the electric SUV.
Tesla Model Y Performance owners will now be able to access the electric-car giant’s ‘Track Mode’ software, more than two years after the feature was first promised.
In a July 2020 post on social media platform Twitter, Tesla CEO Elon Musk claimed the Model Y would be the company’s next electric car to gain Track Mode, following the flagship Model S Plaid and Model 3 Performance grades.
Last week, Tesla uploaded a video to social media platform Twitter – now owned by Mr Musk – announcing the electric-car company would be rolling out Track Mode for the Model Y Performance variant via an over-the-air update.
Track Mode allows Tesla Model Y Performance drivers to make their own adjustments to the car’s traction control, stability control, regenerative braking and cooling systems – all of which can be saved across up to 20 individual profiles which can be tailored for different driving conditions.
Tesla’s Track Mode also includes the ability for drivers to view g-forces in real-time and record their data while on a circuit, which can be later downloaded to a USB drive and paired with video from the car’s onboard cameras.

While Track Mode is capable of providing extra cooling to the Tesla Model Y’s electric motors, the SUV doesn’t gain any extra power or accelerate faster than it does without the software enabled.
According to EV Database, the Model Y Performance produces up to 393kW and 660Nm from its dual electric motors, although Tesla does not provide official specifications.
Tesla claims the Model Y Performance can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 3.7 seconds before reaching a top speed of 250km/h.
In Australia, the Tesla Model Y was launched in June but the first deliveries of the Performance variant are not expected to arrive until next year.
Tesla’s Australian website estimates new orders for the Model Y Performance are scheduled to be delivered between April and June 2023.
