Ford’s electric Mustang Mach-E is expected to enter its second generation from mid-2026, with a ‘coupe’ forecast to be added to the current SUV body style.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E electric SUV is not only here to stay – despite accusations it is not worthy of the Mustang name – the range is set to expand.
US automotive insights firm Auto Forecast Solutions has released a report which claims Ford’s second-generation Mustang Mach-E SUV will be available in SUV and coupe bodystyles when it goes on sale from mid-2026.
It is not yet clear whether this Ford Mustang Mach-E Coupe would be a true two-door, although the model’s ‘CX799’ codename suggests it will be a C-segment crossover (SUV), based on the car-maker’s previous nomenclature.
For context, the current Ford Mustang Mach-E – which launched in 2020 – is codenamed CX733, while the petrol-powered Ford Mustang coupe is named the S550, set to be replaced by the S650 next year (S being for sports-car).
According to the Auto Forecast Solutions report, production of the first-generation Mustang Mach-E is due to end in June 2026, with the second-generation electric SUV starting to roll down the Ford’s Cuautitlan, Mexico, a month later.
The report forecasts the second-generation Ford Mustang Mach-E production is due to come to an end in June 2033, about two years after the Mach-E coupe wraps up.
The 2026 Ford Mustang Mach-E is expected to be underpinned by a platform named ‘GE2.1’ – announced in May 2021 as a successor to the car’s existing GE1 architecture.
While the Mustang Mach-E is Ford’s first electric car to be built in a factory for dedicated battery-powered vehicles, its GE1 platform is a heavily-modified version of the C2 architecture used in the petrol-powered Escape and Focus.
According to US new-car sales data from Good Car Bad Car, Ford has sold 34,683 electric Mustang Mach-Es between January to the end of November 2022 – coming within 6000 sales of the petrol-powered Mustang’s 40,471 deliveries.
While the Ford Mustang is sold in right-hand-drive markets such as the UK and New Zealand, the electric SUV is yet to be confirmed for Australia.
In September, Ford Australia boss Andrew Birkic claimed the Mustang Mach-E is being sold in neighbouring New Zealand and not in Australia because: “New Zealand has different homologation requirements than Australia.”
Well-placed dealer sources have previously told Drive the Ford Mustang Mach-E is a certainty for Australia, despite the US car-giant’s local arm remaining tight-lipped as to whether the electric car will arrive in showrooms.
Earlier this month, Ford celebrated the 150,000th Mustang Mach-E rolling off the production line, with factories in Mexico and China contributing to the achievement across a two-year period.
