China’s four-wheel-drive answer to the Jeep Wrangler has arrived in Australia with hybrid power and two model grades, priced from about $56,000 drive-away.

- Off-road capability with locking differential

- Priced from $55,990 drive-away
The 2023 GWM Tank 300 four-wheel-drive is now on sale in Australia with petrol-electric hybrid power – and prices starting from $55,990 drive-away.
The first model in Australia from the Great Wall Motors (GWM) group’s Tank off-road brand, the five-seat Tank 300 is a similar size to a Jeep Wrangler, and rides on ute-like ladder-frame underpinnings.
It launches in a choice of two model grades – Lux and Ultra – both powered by a petrol-electric hybrid system.
The Tank 300’s price – from $55,990 drive-away – places it about $25,000 more affordable than the cheapest Jeep Wrangler, and $10,000 less than an entry-level 4WD Ford Everest (which also has five seats, but a seven-seat layout is optional).
The Chinese Tank 300 is the first ‘conventional’ hybrid four-wheel-drive in its category, as Toyota doesn’t offer hybrid versions of its 4WDs – and the only hybridised 4WD on sale, the more expensive Land Rover Defender, is only offered as a mild-hybrid or plug-in hybrid.
Powering the Tank is a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine developing 180kW/380Nm, combined with an 78kW/268Nm electric motor driving all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission and part-time four-wheel drive.
GWM does not quote a combined power output, however updated Australian government documents indicate the petrol and electric system develop 225kW when working together.
Maximum braked towing capacity is rated at 2500kg, while ground clearance is up to 224mm, and approach and departure angles of 33 and 34 degrees are claimed.
The Tank 300 measures 4760mm long, 1930mm wide and 1903mm tall, with a 2750mm wheelbase. Compared to a four-door Jeep Wrangler, it is about 120mm shorter in overall length, and 250mm shorter in wheelbase, but 40mm wider and 75mm taller.
Standard equipment on the entry-level Lux includes 17-inch wheels, LED headlights, dual 12.3-inch screens, synthetic leather seats, a sunroof, locking rear differential, 360-degree camera, and a suite of advanced safety technology.
It also is fitted as standard with a ‘tank turn’ mode that brakes the inside rear wheel on loose surfaces to tighten the turning radius – and a crawl control system that functions as a low-speed off-road cruise control system.
The Ultra flagship adds 18-inch wheels, heated and cooled front seats, nappa leather trim, a front differential lock, additional underbody protection, premium audio, a heated steering wheel, and more.
