Toyota Australia says it will need to get through the 10,000-plus customers waiting for a LandCruiser 70 Series before it starts taking more orders.
The Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series remains sold out indefinitely as the company confirmed overnight that order books are not likely to reopen for at least another six months.
Some Toyota dealers have even displayed estimated delivery times of “never”, as a sign of their frustration.
The sales and marketing boss of Toyota Australia, Sean Hanley, told a media conference in Sydney overnight order books would remain closed for “at least six months”. However, even when that deadline approaches, it could be extended again.
The high-ranking Toyota executive declined to say how many customers were waiting, but he said delivery dates stretched more than a year for the LandCruiser 70 Series – the oldest model in the company’s line-up.
Given that Toyota has sold between 10,000 and 12,000 examples of the LandCruiser 70 Series over each of the previous two years, Drive understands there are at least 10,000 customers in the queue.
“We are trying very hard to increase our production capacity with that car,” said Mr Hanley.
“It is quite unique to our country and we want to satisfy that demand.
“We have a considerable order bank (but) we still have another year before we clear it.”
The Toyota executive said order books would remain closed because “we’ve got to give priority to those customers, hence the reason we’ve taken the action we have.”
