The highly-competitive seven-seat family SUV segment could soon have a new rival from China.
The Chery Tiggo 9 is the name expected to be given to a new seven-seat family SUV from the Chinese brand – and it could be coming to Australia.
Teaser images of the camouflaged model were understood to have been offered to some international media outlets – including Drive – showing the new Chery SUV wrapped in camouflage.
At 4780mm long, the Tiggo 9 will be the largest model sold with a Chery badge when it goes on sale – just five millimetres short of the Hyundai Santa Fe medium SUV, and 35mm longer than the Tiggo 8 Pro.
It’s expected the Tiggo 9 will be powered by the company’s 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder engine, producing 187kW and 390Nm in the Tiggo 8 Pro.
Though the vehicle has yet to be officially confirmed by the carmaker, the Tiggo 9 – referred to internally as the T26 – is a good chance to join the range alongside the Tiggo 7 Pro and Tiggo 8 Pro when the brand relaunches here in 2023.
A spokesperson for Chery declined to comment directly about the Tiggo 9, but told Drive that Australia was one of the most important markets for the company, and we would get “the very latest and the very best” models from its line-up.
While there is a chance the model could adopt a unique name not linked to the Tiggo series, the new seven-seater Chery is expected to compete with the Toyota Kluger, Mazda CX-9, Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe.
