Doing a burnout in front of a marked police car – while drunk – is a quick way to have your licence suspended and vehicle impounded, as this Canberra man discovered last week.
Police in the nation’s capital have suspended the licence of a 31-year-old Canberra man after the driver performed a burnout in front of a marked police car – while he was more than three-times over the legal blood-alcohol limit.
In a video taken on Friday afternoon and posted to YouTube by ACT Policing, the man’s Toyota LandCruiser can be seen driving slowly off the nature strip and onto a quiet street in the suburb of Gilmore.
Against the advice of an onlooker who filmed the incident on a mobile phone, the drunk driver performed a burnout as a Subaru Outback police car approached it from behind.
After tearing up the right-side tyre for more than 20 seconds, the LandCruiser continues on to the nearby intersection of Louisa Lawson Crescent and Litchfield Place, where the following police car activates its lights and sirens.
According to ACT Policing, “the driver returned a positive roadside screen for alcohol; he later returned a positive breath sample of 0.151 – more than three times the legal 0.05 limit”.
“The man’s drivers’ licence was immediately suspended, and his vehicle seized,” ACT Policing said in a media statement. “He has also been charged with drink driving and improper use of a motor vehicle.”
Adding to the driver’s stupidity, he was warned about the police presence before he started the burnout.
In a video posted on Instagram by Brown Cardigan, the person who filmed the stunt-gone-wrong can be heard saying “time to do a skid” before focusing on the police car completing a U-turn at the end of the street.
The man filming says “you’re not allowed now” to the driver, seconds before the burnout commences.
As one commenter pointed out, there was a “breakdown in communication there lads”.
A witness to the event told Drive the police were in the area to attend to an unrelated assault.
