It may not be unusual to see an exotic car in this condition, but it is rare to find a mainstream Japanese sports car from the 1970s like this.
A 1973 Mazda RX-4 – one of Mazda’s most luxurious coupes of the mid-1970s – with a mere 6397 kilometres on the clock has gone up for sale.
Originally sold in its home country of Japan under the Luce badge, the Mazda uses a 1.2-litre ‘12A’ twin-rotor engine – the same found in early RX-7 sports cars – which powers the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission.
Offered by Oldtimer Australia for $149,950, the Jewel Green RX-4 is reportedly in original condition, with the last recorded registration being in 1985 – after which the vehicle was stored, before being imported into Australia by an avid Mazda enthusiast in 2003.
Presented like a time capsule, the Mazda coupe still has the original protective plastics on the door trims, indicator stalk, and sun visor, while the front seats also feature the quintessentially Japanese seat ‘doilies’ over the top of the plastic.
The cabin also features an eight-track Clarion cassette player, original jack and toolkit, and the seller is offering the car’s original Bridgestone tyres with the sale – though a set of Firestone tyres were fitted to the RX-4 upon its arrival in Australia.
