California to ban the sale of petrol cars by 2035 in milestone move for electric vehicles

New clean-air regulations in California could be copied across the USA – and impact the motoring world.

The sale of new petrol cars will be banned in California by 2035 under new clean-air regulations to restrict and ultimately eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from new passenger vehicles.

The US state has traditionally led air-quality standards in the USA, in moves which have regulated the emissions of passenger vehicles around the world, and was one of the first to provide incentives for hybrid and electric vehicles.

The new move by the California Air Resources Board, first reported by the New York Times, targets a ban on sales of new petrol cars by 2035, but also sets interim goals beginning from 2026.

The first gateway is a zero-emissions requirement for 35 per cent of all new passenger vehicle sales by 2026, followed by 68 per cent in 2030 and 100 per cent in 2035.

Car manufacturers are already reacting to the regulations and the increased pressure on a switch to electric vehicles, with Ford praising a “landmark standard” and Honda describing it as “an ambitious but important milestone”.

“The CARB Advanced Clean Cars II rule is a landmark standard that will define clean transportation and set an example for the United States,” said Bob Holycross, chief sustainability officer at Ford, in an official statement.

“California’s proposed electric vehicle requirements represent an ambitious but important milestone in the future of clean mobility. Today’s action by California makes it more important than ever for policymakers to enact complimentary policies that will accelerate – not decelerate – the adoption of electric vehicles,” Honda said in a statement.

The new policy in California comes as the USA accelerates its work under President Biden to combat climate changes, including a law for clean energy programs including $US370bn in spending and tax credits.

The Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, called the new rule “one of the most significant steps to the elimination of the tailpipe as we know it”.

The new policy is likely to be quickly copied by 16 other US states that have traditionally followed California on emissions policies.
