Reading the road steps to a whole new level with an intelligent suspension program that responds to real-time road conditions.
Tesla has released an over-the-air (OTA) software update that should provide owners of the Tesla Model S and X with a more comfortable ride, as the cars can now detect and adapt for potholes.
Included within the 2022.20 update, the Tesla Adaptive Suspension function utilises the connected network of Teslas on the road to identify and report potholes and other rough conditions to the other vehicles on the network.
Cars will then adjust the air suspension (standard on Model S and Model X) to accommodate the change in road quality for a more comfortable experience behind the wheel. Drivers will be notified on the instrument cluster that their car has been raised to the ‘comfort’ setting.
This hive-mind technology, generally referred to as Car2X (or car-to-X), sees cars share information with each other to better manage changing weather conditions, traffic incidents and road conditions.
While the Tesla function is not as advanced as systems such as Mercedes-Benz’s E-Active Body Control (E-ABC) function, which dynamically adapts the air suspension for the severity and size of each bump, the implementation of a consumer-level connected Car2X system would represent the first of its kind in Australia.
The only downside is that if you are driving the Tesla that first reports the pothole, you get to take one for the team.
The software update also includes a ‘go on green‘ traffic light warning for drivers who are distracted, as well as refinements to the seatbelt pretension and tyre pressure monitoring systems.
Once installed, you can activate the adaptive suspension function by navigating through Controls > Suspension > Adaptive Suspension Damping and selecting either Comfort or Auto.
