Is the sun a bit too bright for the kids in the back? Just dial up the window tint.
A new patent has been filed for window tint which can be dimmed to different levels of darkness.
While a number of carmakers have offered sunroofs that can switch between clear glass and opaque glass instantly, the patent filing specifically refers to the technology allowing the window to be dimmed between different grades of black pigment.
Created by Japanese industrial giant Toppan, the ‘LC Magic’ tint uses liquid crystal molecules to change the darkness of the window across five levels.
It’s not the first active window tint to see the light of day – a company called Own Silent International, which specialises in aftermarket accessories, showed off similar technology on Instagram back in May.
But much like some factory sunroofs – and unlike Toppan’s patent-pending tech – the aftermarket electrically-dimmable window tint simply switches between milky clear and opaque.
It’s unlikely we’ll see Toppan’s active multi-level window tint offered on a production car in the near future, but it’s possible we could eventually see it offered in lieu of privacy tint on high-end chauffeur-driven luxury vehicles like the Toyota Century or Lexus LX (top).
