A new Volkswagen Golf R has been spotted in a Chinese dealership, without any VW branding. Here’s the odd story behind it.
A unusually-branded 2022 Volkswagen Golf R has been photographed inside a Volkswagen dealership in Sichuan, China.
Pictured in images shared to the Foreign Market Car Sightings Facebook group, it’s understood that an entrepreneurial Chinese Volkswagen dealership has decided to parallel-import a 2022 Golf R to satiate local demand – as VW China doesn’t offer the model officially there.
The vehicle shown is a North American-market vehicle that’s been rebranded by the dealership – likely in breach of brand guidelines – and is being prepared to undergo local emissions certification prior to being sold.
Volkswagen Group China has no official plans to introduce the 2022 Golf R into the local market, however local rumours suggest that may change in the near future.
The 2022 Volkswagen Golf Mk8 is currently offered in China in R-Line trim with 1.2-litre or 1.4-litre turbo four-cylinder engines, priced from ¥142,000 ($AU31,000), or as the warmed-up Golf GTI from ¥177,240 ($AU39,000)
American-market Golf Rs are powered by the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder as Australian 2022 models, with 235kW/400Nm, seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, 4Motion all-wheel drive, and no petrol particulate filter.
