Chevrolet’s latest electric vehicle becomes its first to adopt the high-performance SS nameplate.
The 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV will be the first General Motors electric model to be adorned with an SS badge, with the fully-electric SUV unveiled overnight in North America.
An all-electric version of Chevrolet’s Blazer mid-size to large SUV – which is usually available with a range of petrol engines – is set to go on sale in the United States across four model grades – 1LT, 2LT, RS and SS – underpinned by GM’s Ultium electric vehicle architecture.
While Chevrolet is yet to announce specific output details for the front-wheel-drive (1LT, 2LT, RS) and rear-wheel-drive (RS) line-ups, it has confirmed the flagship all-wheel-drive electric SS variant will produce 415kW and 879Nm – enabling a claimed 0-100km/h time of less than four seconds in Chevrolet’s Wide Open Watts (WOW) mode.
All Blazer variants support Level 2 AC charging at up to 11.5kW as well as 190kW DC fast-charging, providing an additional 125km of driving range in just 10 minutes.
Details on the size of the Blazer’s battery pack hasn’t yet been announced, although the manufacturer has said driving range varies between 400km for the 1LT and a maximum of 515kW in RS trim, while the range-topping SS can run for 465km on a single charge.
Both the 1LT and 2LT grades are fitted with 19-inch wheels, stepping up to 21-inch for the RS while the flagship SS features 22-inch alloys.
The top two variants also score an LED light bar which incorporates an illuminated Chevrolet ‘bow tie’, programmed to show the Blazer’s charge level and play various light sequences when occupants walk towards away from the vehicle.
Inside the cabin, the driver is met with an 11-inch digital instrument cluster and a 17.7-inch central infotainment touchscreen, angled towards the occupant behind the flat-bottomed steering wheel.
Among the high level of safety technology on the Blazer is GM’s hands-free Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system, added to the safety suite which includes automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, front pedestrian detection and braking and advanced park assist.
Going on sale from $US44,995 ($AU65,700) before taxes in 1LT trim, the Blazer EV line-up increases to $US47,595 ($AU69,500) for the 2LT and $US51,995 ($AU75,900) in RS guise before the SS tops out at $US65,995 ($AU96,300).
Although it wears the familiar SS badge – well-known in Australia on V8-powered Holden Commodore models – Drive understands there are no plans to introduce the Chevrolet Blazer EV locally.
For now, General Motors Specialty Vehicles (GMSV) is focusing on high-profit full-size pick-ups such as the Silverado, and the Chevrolet Corvette for the Australian market.
