The MG HS Plus EV has been hit with another $1000 price hike, making the flagship grade close to $5000 dearer than it was last March – with no additional features.
Prices of the 2022 MG HS Plus EV plug-in hybrid have increased by a further $1000 – just months after the last price rise, for total increases of up to $4700 since launch last year.
Listed on MG’s website from July 1, the HS Plus EV Excite has risen by $1000 to $48,690 drive-away, while the flagship Essence variant jumps from $50,690 to $51,690 drive-away, both attributed to rising material and logistics costs.
“MG Motor Australia has only implemented a $1000 price increase for HS [Plus] EV models built in 2022,” a company spokesperson confirmed to Drive in a statement.
“The price increase has been kept to an absolute minimum and purely brought about by rising material costs and continued increases in global supply chains that are affecting MG, like other manufacturers and industries around the world.”
The latest $1000 increase means that since its launch in March 2021, the HS Plus EV Essence (formerly PHEV Essence) has risen by $4700 – while the HS Plus EV Excite has jumped $1700 in the four months since its March 2022 launch.
Last month, Drive reported on an earlier $1700 price rise for 2022-built HS Plus EVs – comprised of a $1000 hike due to material cost increases, and $700 due to the deletion of the only free paint colour, Clipper Blue, with three metallic finishes (previously $700) now the only options.
Prices on 2021-built HS Plus EV Essence models (formerly badged HS PHEV Essence) increased by $1000 from February 2022 – while the first of the PHEV’s price rises arrived in July 2021, to the tune of $1000.
No changes have been made to standard features, beyond the upgrade to a seven-year warranty in July 2021 – and the inclusion of metallic paint in the price in June 2022.
Despite the price rises, the entry-level MG remains Australia’s most affordable plug-in hybrid, undercutting the $50,490 drive-away Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV ES.
