2023 Porsche 911 GT3 RS drops camo

As we approach the 992 GT3 RS’s reveal date, Porsche’s track-day superstar has shown off its new aero-focused body.

The 992-generation 2023 Porsche 911 GT3 RS has been caught on camera without its disguise, ahead of the model’s official unveiling.

Our spy photography partners in Germany snapped the 911 GT3 RS while Porsche engineers completed final testing on the high-performance 992, revealing its wild bodywork complementing the car’s monstrous rear wing.

It’s understood the wing features active aero – a flap which can open similarly to the Drag Reduction System (DRS) found on F1 cars – along with ‘swan neck’ pylons to reduce turbulence.

While this particular test vehicle has downward-facing centre exhaust tips, it’s not clear whether these will appear on the final production car, with other test vehicles spotted with more traditional chrome tips.

Cut-outs in the rear bumper bar behind the wheels appear to have been added to improve aerodynamics, but locally-delivered cars could see this enclosed due to mud-flap requirements mandated by Australian Design Rules.

At the front, the GT3’s bonnet nostrils have been opened up, and fender vents above the front wheels have been carried over from the 991 GT3 RS. Large winglets also feature fore and aft of the front wheels – all of which has been added to help direct air at high speeds.

Porsche is expected to follow its recipe for the GT3 RS and power the coupe with a naturally-aspirated flat-six, driving the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Some rumours suggest the GT3’s highly-strung engine could be massaged to 4.2 litres to help increase its performance figures without reverting to turbocharging or electrification, perhaps for the last time.

Regardless, an increase over the 375kW/470Nm the engine produces in the GT3 is a safe bet. The previous 991.2 GT3 RS offered 383kW and 470Nm.

The 2023 Porsche 992 911 GT3 RS is expected to be unveiled in the coming weeks and months – though the model isn’t slated to be shown at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, contrary to some media reports.
