After a troubling 2021, McLaren is set to introduce its new entry-level hybrid supercar in Australia.
British supercar manufacturer McLaren has enjoyed a fruitful 2021 in Australia. Its sales are up over 30 per cent year-on-year, with a number of high-end and limited-edition models offered to Australia’s most wealthy.
Its local success comes against the backdrop of more troubling times globally, however. In September 2020, the brand listed its iconic, purpose-built headquarters for sale to raise capital. Then in October 2021, McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt left the job without reason after an eight-year tenure.
If that wasn’t enough drama, the year culminated with talk of a sensationalised takeover bid by German manufacturer Audi.
In 2022, we’re expecting to see one new model from the brand. Called the McLaren Artura, it represents a new entry-level model and replaces its dated 570S.
It’s also a hybrid too, meaning its 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 is paired to an electric motor. In total, the powertrain produces 500kW/720Nm, enables 30km of all-electric range, and sips just 5.5L/100km on the combined cycle, according to the brand.
The 2022 McLaren Artura is expected to arrive in Australia during the first quarter of 2022 – a delay from the third or fourth quarter of 2021 timing previously announced – with prices starting from $449,000 before on-roads.
