China’s Ora electric car brand confirmed for Australia

The

GWM Haval-owned marque is preparing to launch its Good Cat small hatchback Down Under.

GWM Haval’s electric sub-brand Ora will arrive in Australian showrooms next year – joining a growing cohort of cost-focused zero-emission vehicles.

The Baoding-based marque – which was founded in 2018, and is an acronym for

“open, reliable and alternative” – currently builds four models; the Black Cat small hatchback, White Cat city car, Good Cat city car, and IQ high-riding sedan.

“Under the overwhelming wave of electrification, as one of the important areas of Great Wall Motor’s global strategic map, the Australian market has laid out the line-up of electrified products prospectively, and started the ‘fully charged’ journey of electrification,” a globally-distributed market report said.

“In 2022, the first batch of electric models will be launched in Australia, including the pure-electric brand Ora.”

A spokesperson for GWM Haval in Australia would not comment directly, however told Drive: “We’re still looking at specific dates and model variants for this market.”

While officially unconfirmed, it’s highly likely the Ora Good Cat city hatchback (shown above) – which is already built in right-hand drive, and recently went on sale in the United Kingdom – will debut as the marque’s first model Down Under.

Chinese marques Nio and BYD are also slated to launch electric cars in Australia over the next five years, while locally-delivered examples of the upcoming Tesla Model Y and BMW iX3 SUVs will also be built in the country.
