Hungry Jack’s is not rolling out an electric charging ‘network’

The fast-food chain installed an Evie fast charger at one site this week, but there are currently no plans for broader adoption.

One Hungry Jack’s franchise in Cabramatta, NSW pulled the covers off a new electric vehicle charger in its outdoor carpark this week – but, considering the publicity it generated, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was a much bigger deal than that.

The dual-stall outlet – which has four leads, and is capable of 120kW DC fast charging – was installed by French technology company Evie, with Australian government backing via the recently-revealed ‘Future Fuels’ fund.

“Hungry Jack’s is famously known for our better burgers, but we also want to create a better world,” CEO of the fast food outlet, Chris Green, said in an official statement.

However – despite numerous media reports this week suggesting the charger is part of the wider

rollout of a new nationalised Australian fast food infrastructure ‘network’ – a spokesperson for Hungry Jack’s confirmed to Drive “yes, it’s just the [one].”

Of the 440

Hungry Jack’s restaurants across Australia’s seven states and territories, 439 are not currently equipped with electric vehicle charging facilities. However, Mr Green noted: “if the demand is there, we will look at other … sites.”

According to the Electric Vehicle Council, there are currently more than 3000 charging stalls in Australia across 1650 separate locations. Of these, approximately 470 are fast chargers.

Yesterday, the Federal Government announced its strategy to increase electric vehicles uptake over the next decade.

While subsidies and tax incentives were ruled out, approximately $AU250 million was earmarked for the expansion of zero-emission charging infrastructure.
