In the same way energy rating labels on whitegoods compare electricity use of home appliances, fuel rating labels aim to compare consumption of new motor vehicles on a level playing field. However, for the past 20 years, the so-called level playing field for cars has been a laboratory setting where temperatures are controlled, special fuels are used, and highly skilled engineers follow a series of instructions designed to mimic real-world driving scenarios.
