When we took delivery of our Hichroma Red 2018 Kia Stinger Si V6, the first thing we wanted to do was strap it onto a dyno to see just how much power it makes at the rear wheels.
In stock form, the Kia Stinger delivers 272kW of power and 510Nm of torque, but that’s at the flywheel. After torque is sent through the drivetrain (including the automatic gearbox), there’s generally a loss of around 15-20 per cent by the time that torque hits the pavement.
After running the Stinger in over 3000km, we visited the guys at Chasers Motorsport in Melbourne to test the Stinger and find out what kind of numbers it could really produce.
The tuners at Chasers all put their guesses on the board, with the consensus that it would spit out around 200kW at the rear treads. But there was a problem — we had noticed at a recent track day that it felt a bit underpowered compared to the yellow Stinger we had in our comparison against the Commodore SS-V Redline.
While the guys were setting the car up, they discovered a small hose at the front of the engine had come loose. According to the tuners, “it’s the boost line from the intercooler pipe before the throttle body to the solenoid. It was quite short and looks like it would come off very easily. We replaced it with a slightly longer hose, which fixed the issue.”
This would explain why the car felt underpowered compared to the last one we drove. As a precaution, we ran the dyno test four times in total — three times with the hose connected and once with it disconnected. With the hose disconnected, it was almost 90kW down on our final number.
SPOILER ALERT: After our three runs, it was fairly consistent at just under 234kW of power (233.7kW). That makes for a theoretical drivetrain loss of 14.08 per cent, which is pretty good. With the hose disconnected, that number was around 160kW of power, making for a 41.17 per cent loss.
