The two most popular vehicles in Australia this year so far are light commercials, with the Toyota HiLux staying atop the charts and the rampaging Ford Ranger overtaking the Corolla.

Reflecting Australians’ almost insatiable taste for utes, four of the ten most popular sellers over the first third of 2017 are utes, with the Mitsubishi Triton in seventh (ahead of the Holden Commodore) and the Holden Colorado in tenth.

The HiLux leads the market with 13,763 units over four months, up about 6 per cent on last year’s huge haul. But the Ranger, with 12,518 units, is growing faster, at 12 per cent up YTD.

Moreover, the Ford leads the HiLux in the larger and more lucrative 4×4 part of the market, 10,730 units to 10,066.

Third overall behind the HiLux and Ranger is the Toyota Corolla (12,464, down 2.5 per cent), which sits ahead of two other small cars, the Mazda 3 (11,968, down 6 per cent) and Hyundai i30 (8383, down 34 per cent ahead of the arrival of the all-new version).

Next is the Mazda CX-5, which remains Australia’s top SUV (8139, up 4 per cent), ahead of the Triton (7199, down 5 per cent), which sits ahead of the Commodore (7048, down 12 per cent), Hyundai Tucson (6960, up 7 per cent) and Colorado (6490, up 14 per cent).

Over all new vehicle sales in 2017 are down on last year’s high-water market, by 2.8 per cent However, light commercials have bucked the trend to grow 1.8 per cent, a higher rate than SUVs.
