My #firstcar! Well, sort of.
Here’s the latest addition to CarAdvice’s long term fleet: the 2017 Mazda 2 Neo, finished in the Japanese company’s signature Soul Red paint.
Starting at $14,990 before on-road costs, our tester is equipped with the optional six-speed automatic transmission ($2000), and the aforementioned special paint ($300), bringing the as-tested price to $17,290 plus ORCs.
Under the bonnet is a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine, developing 79kW of power at 6000rpm and 139Nm of torque at 4000rpm, sent to the front wheels. Claimed fuel consumption is rated at 5.5L/100km of 91-RON unleaded on the combined cycle.
Standard equipment includes 15-inch steel wheels, black cloth seat trim, manual air conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, USB and AUX inputs, push-button start, a new-style multifunction steering wheel, and rear parking sensors.
As part of a 2017 model-year update, Mazda’s smallest hatch and sedan range also see the addition of a new city-speed autonomous emergency braking (AEB) up to 30km/h, along with the company’s G-Vectoring system which adjusts torque delivery to the front wheels. There are also two sets of ISOFIX child seat anchor points in the second row
Mazda says the GVC technology helps to improve turn-in, while tweaked dampers and bushing, along with extra sound insulation for the updated model help to improve NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness levels).
As the Mazda 2 is my first car, and will likely be bought as a first car for many young people, our long-term reports are going to focus on those fun milestones you go through with your first vehicle, including the daily commute, road trips, the Maccas run, drive-ins, and the important things like getting your insurance sorted and getting your first service.
