Images of the MG E-Motion concept have surfaced online this week, hinting at a new sports car for the Chinese-owned British brand ahead of a likely debut at the Shanghai motor show next week.
The slinky coupe is believed to be an electric sports car, based on parent company SAIC Motor’s electric vehicle platform.
China’s Autohome speculates the MG E-Motion will preview a host of connected technology, similar to the SAIC Roewe RX5 ‘smartcar’, while the all-electric powertrain could launch the E-Motion to 100km/h in under four seconds.
In terms of its styling, the MG E-Motion is a departure from the insect-like looks of most of its current models, including the MG3, MG6 and GS, though the headlight and front grille treatments aren’t dissimilar to the new ZS small SUV – which will be arriving in Australia later this year.
The side profile of the electric coupe is a classic design, with a long bonnet and short rear overhang, while the small gill in the front quarter panel aligns the E-Motion with other famous British coupes like those from Aston Martin and Jaguar.
Out back there’s some upright tail-lights which wrap around the rear quarter panel, with a prominent MG badge on the rump.
It could be a return to form for MG, who hasn’t offered a sports car model since before coming under Chinese ownership at the beginning of the decade.
Interestingly, the MG badge has been rounded-off for this concept, doing away with the famous octagon shape. In a sense, this revised branding aligns the logo with the original circle badge used at the brand’s founding in the early 1900s.
Whether we’ll see this new-look badge on future production models is unclear, although the upcoming ZS SUV debuted with the familiar octagon. This rounded look, then, may merely be conceptual for the sake of imagination.
Further details of the MG E-Motion concept remain under wraps for now, so stay tuned for our coverage of the 2017 Shanghai motor show, which commences on April 21.
