For most of us, our obsession with cars began with that $2 model car from the local supermarket. More often than not, it was a Matchbox or Hot Wheels item. After all, you risked being ostracised by your friends if you went anywhere near anything else…
As kids, the packaging was ripped apart to play with the service station playset, but, as adults, you realise the packaging is just as important as the model and you proudly show them off on a shelf.
We thought our collection here in the CarAdvice offices was big, but, errr, nope. Barn Finds recently discovered an estate sale in the USA that was auctioning a collection of 10,000 Hot Wheels models, all in their packaging.
Sadly, a few tables that had more sought-after models on it, was stuck in the rain and ruined quite a few of them, bringing the value down a little.
The auctioneer was originally going to sell them table-by-table, but after negotiating with the family, the whole collection was to be sold as one lot.
The bidding began at AUD$19,000, which is almost the same price as a Kia Cerato, and there was no word if they sold.
Our thoughts? Tell ’em they’re dreamin’.
