The Toyota FT-4X concept has been teased ahead of its debut at the New York motor show in a few weeks time.

Aside for acknowledging the existence of the concept and announcing its upcoming debut on the first press day of the 2017 New York motor show, Toyota is only saying that the car will be “four wheeling” and “scene stealing”.

All we know at this stage is that it will have 18-inch alloy wheels shod with the chunky 255/55 Goodyear tyres.

With the current Toyota 4Runner edging towards its eighth birthday, it’s likely that the FT-4X points the way to a sixth generation of the nameplate, one that will do battle with the Jeep Wrangler or upcoming Ford Bronco.

That said, the rest of Toyota’s off-roader family is getting on too with the 200-Series Land Cruiser dating back to 2007, and the current Land Cruiser Prado coming from the class of 2009.

Other possibilities include an extreme off-roading variant of the Tacoma ute or a successor to the out-of-production FJ Cruiser.

Typically Toyota has reserved its FT prefix, standing for Future Toyota, for concept cars that have a clear production intent. Most famously the FT-86 morphed into the road-going Toyota 86, while the FT-1 concept previews the upcoming Supra successor that’s being developed in conjunction with the BMW Z5.

Other Toyota concepts, such as the i-TRIL or the Setsuna, have production odds longer than the Newtown Jets winning the NRL premiership or Melbourne University taking the AFL flag.
